Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils and can be due to a bacterial or viral infection. Tonsillitis usually presents with painful, red and swollen tonsils that may also have crypts with pus on them. Treatment depends on the type of infection and may be conservative or require antibiotics. Repeated infections may require surgical removal.
